September 4, 2026 # Movie: Coyote vs. Acme
Watched Coyote vs. Acme, a very imaginative movie that portrayed a hybrid society in which cartoon characters co-exist with humans. The story is about Coyote (a cartoon character), together with his human lawyer, suing Acme (a human-run company), over defective products which eventually are revealed to be a strategy of using cartoon characters as guinea pigs to improve products for humans. Though completely fictitious, this movie, in my view, does have a possible metaphorical meaning for a rising hybrid society of humans and AI (or robots, to make the coexistence more visually comparable). Humans will certainly do what Acme did with cartoon characters in such a society, or perhaps I should say have the intention to do so, since who knows, it might turn out that AI will have the upper hand, and humans will be in a position more similar to what Coyote found himself in in the movie. :-)

September 10, 2026 # Set of All Sets
We all know that there are infinitely many integers, and there is no such thing as the biggest integer, but the set of all integers is a totally fine concept. It is so for many other things as well. You might even think that this is always the case ‒ after all, it is almost trivial to at least conceptually think of the "totality" of anything. But this turns out to be wrong, and one deeply consequential counter-example is: there is no such thing as the set of all sets! [Notes (a reply to a reader who asked for why): It goes like this: It can be shown (first by George Cantor) that for any set, the set of all its subsets is a "bigger" set. This then immediately leads to the nonexistence of the set of all sets, in complete analogy to the nonexistence of the biggest integer.]
September 11, 2026 # Movie: Fall 2: Deadpoint
For someone with minor acrophobia, it is a little bit challenging to watch Fall 2: Deadpoint, and I did it with my palms lightly sweating. It's a thrilling story (more so for me though) with a dramatic turn near the end ‒ before the turn, I was envisioning a romantic ending between Jax (the main character) and Jon (the guide), which could hardly be further away from the real ending. Though nervously enjoyed, there are two things in this movie I considered defective: 1. The plank path that has been largely functional for dozens of years was struck down by an earthquake at the exact moment when it was needed, and around the exact location where it was needed, which was way too fine-tuned. 2. It is impossible to let a hand-held laser pointer stably shine on a billiard ball over such a far distance, unavoidable muscle vibration will be magnified into large and random swings.
September 16, 2026 # Artificial Voice
When AI voice was not yet too common on YouTube, there was a period during which I actually liked it more than the often accented human voices (I even, for a moment, mistook it for a human voice, until eventually encountered the same exact voice on multiple clearly unrelated channels). But now, most commonly used AI voices are on my blacklist, and I have purged from my subscriptions most channels that used such voices. It's not because those voices sound bad (they are not at all), nor merely due to aesthetic fatigue, but mainly because I learned that many YouTube channels nowadays use AI to generate content, which I not only have no appetite for, but would feel offended if I were tricked into viewing it. And I consider a channel with an AI voice to be a channel far more likely to have AI-generated content (I know this could be wrong, but there are too many channels to watch anyway, which allows me the luxury of being harsh with this personal choice).
September 21, 2026 # Movie: Runner
Watched Runner, a movie that reminded me of The Transporter, whose details have faded from my memory but the title of both refers to a person (happens to be a former special operations soldier in both cases) who transports things or persons. One complaint I have about this movie is: during a super time-critical running (to not only out-run enemies, but also to deliver an organ before it goes bad and save a girl before she dies, both of which are imminent), the two main characters often stop to chat, so trivially silly that I considered a loophole. But other than that, it is a fine movie that was fun to watch (though I shouldn't say so considering the graveness of the mission).
